Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches

A CREC Congregation

We are a member of the Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches. The CREC is an international, vibrant church community of evangelical believers shaped by the Reformation.

We are deeply committed to the evangelical tenets of biblical authority and the free grace of God in Christ, and we believe that Jesus is King and Lord of Heaven and Earth. CREC churches and parishes are located across North and South America, Western and Eastern Europe, and Eastern Asia.

Our Name

✦ ✠ ✦

Cornerstone

The primary name of this local church has been Cornerstone since it first came to be in God’s providence on July 26, 1981. Because this church is committed above all else to being Christ-centered and gospel-saturated, it remains the most accurate name.

Jesus Christ is the church’s one foundation and cornerstone. He and His great gospel are at the core of who we are, what we believe, and what we do. He is ours, we are His, and He is the Chief Cornerstone.

Reformed

We stand in the Reformed tradition of the church and embrace the doctrine and practice recovered through the Protestant Reformation. We affirm God’s glorious sovereignty, the doctrines of grace, and justification by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, according to God’s Word alone, all for God’s glory alone.

As an imperfect church still growing in conformity to God’s Word, we seek to be Reformed and always reforming.

Church

A local church is a covenant community of God’s people who have been called out of darkness and into His marvelous light. We are united to Jesus and therefore united to His church throughout all time.

We show this union through historic Christian orthodoxy and the Apostles’ Creed, and by living in joyful submission to Christ’s Lordship. We are a church because we are His church.

How We Worship

✦ ✠ ✦

Every church follows a liturgy—an order of worship—on the Lord’s Day. At Cornerstone, we follow a Covenant Renewal pattern that is gospel-shaped, covenant-minded, and God-centered.

We believe it is necessary to worship God on His terms, for our God is a consuming fire (Hebrews 10:22–25; 12:28–29).

1

Call to Worship

God gathers His people in the Holy Spirit and calls them to worship Him in spirit and truth. Our service begins with a call to worship, which includes a scripture reading and prayer, and an invitation to sing God’s praises. We encourage robust and enthusiastic congregational singing. Our worship music is a combination of Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.

2

Confession and Cleansing

God is faithful and forgives His people. Having come into the presence of a holy God, we respond as all the faithful saints of old did when encountering God. We fall on our face and confess our sins and need for mercy. We confess our private sins privately, and then the whole church confesses our general sins generally, seeking His forgiveness in prayer. Then we confess our faith by reciting a portion of Scripture, or one of our creeds, or a portion of our confession. The minister then reminds us that in and because of Christ, God forgives our sins and remembers them no more.

3

Consecration

God equips His people for works of service by the ministry of the Word and prayer. We believe God’s Word prepares us for life in this world and the world to come. In obedience to God’s Word we devote ourselves to the public reading of scripture and to preaching and teaching the Word of God in season and out of season (1 Tim 4:13; 2 Tim 4:1-5). The sermon is always based on a text from the Bible. The goal of the sermon is to feed God’s flock healthy doctrine that informs our minds, transforms our hearts, and reforms our lives according to God’s word.

4

Communion

God nourishes His people at the Table. We take the Lord’s supper every Sunday. Communion is a joyful time of fellowship, prayer, and encouragement. We feast and fellowship with the Lord around His table.

5

Commission

God sends His people on mission with His blessing. A minister of the Word offers a benediction and charges us to go out into the world as sheep among wolves, light among darkness, to take the cross to the culture.
